3 habits to help you age gracefully |
|
|
|
My pampered friends, I believe that women (and men) are like a fine wine, meaning we all have the ability to get better with age. This is not to say, however, that it doesn’t take some work — and I’m not talking about anti-wrinkle regimens. By instilling good habits within ourselves, we are able to make time our friend instead of our enemy.
1. Exercise Sure, it gives you a great shape, but exercise also has many long-term benefits beyond aesthetics. By exercising regularly, you lower your risk of diseases such as Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. You also condition your body to age well with strengthened muscles and bone density, particularly for women who are prone to osteoporosis. Exercise also elevates your mood and self-confidence naturally with the release of endorphins, the chemical within our body that is released during physical activity. Endorphins can counter the effects of depression, anxiety and stress. By making exercise a habit, you also become a good role model for others around you, especially children who tend to sit with their laptops instead of engaging in physical activity.

Living in San Diego, we are spoiled by rich cultural history and diversity. This week, my pampered friends, we journey to a different time (the 1800s to be exact). In Old Town, you need not imagine what life was like in the era of cowboys, adobe homes, and saloons. You’ll have to rub your eyes as women walk by in bonnets and petticoats. You may even stroke down the hairs on the back of your neck as tales of those who walked these paths centuries before you come (perhaps a little too vividly for comfort) to life on ghost tours. In the company of other treasures such as the Theatre in Old Town and the Whaley House lies the traditional Mexican-inspired Fiesta de Reyes, complete with authentic dining at Casa de Reyes, Barra Barra, and Joseph Melluso’s Cosmopolitan Hotel, a range of shops, and more. Mary Prewitt, Chuck Ross, and their warm staff worked hard to re-educate locals and tourists alike of Old Town’s charm through their efforts to reinvigorate Fiesta de Reyes. After many years of vacationing in San Diego, Prewitt made a home here and is proud to contribute to the community and city she enjoys so much. Upon taking the managerial reins, Ross sought out the feedback of a citizens’ advisory group. From requests for umbrellas to repairs on roof tiles, the team worked to seamlessly resuscitate Fiesta de Reyes. The business has even become a family affair. Adding to the character of the area is the lovely landscaping of succulents designed by Chuck’s wife. Live performances on the outdoor stage and costumed staff welcoming you with roasted nuts and smiles greet you into a true fiesta. |

Looking forward (and a little backward) to Fall fashion |
|
|
|
It’s tough saying goodbye to summer…but saying hello to fall fashion always manages to appease this Filipina fashionista. We’re only a month away from seeing the temperature drop just enough to store the sandals, pull out the boots, toss the bikinis, and check out chic sweaters. Here’s your peek into the coming season’s hottest trends! Many of them may look awfully familiar…
Decade Du Jour Glamorous and conservative 50s…Mod 60s…Sexy 70s…and, yes, the 80s style that just won’t seem to fully go away…This fall’s fashion is like taking a time warp. If you’ve managed to save or acquire some vintage pieces, it’s time for them to shine once again! Have fun featuring a vintage piece amongst an ensemble composed of simpler, modern basics. Enjoy playing with hairstyles and makeup from different decades, too. It may not be necessary to plump up the beehives and slap on the falsie lashes, but expect to see the return of fun looks such as red-stained lips and curled hair with fashionable hair combs this fall.
Structure Scoot over, overly slouchy (and, let’s admit it, figure-forgiving) pieces! Well-tailored clothing is back…with a vengeance! One size fits all and roundabout sizes just won’t do anymore. It’s time our clothes fit as if they were especially made for us! Forget about settling for “almost right” hemlines, etc. Make yourself a priority, and put effort in making your clothes fit properly. Though it may take a little more work, your body will thank you for showcasing it in its best light. (Oversized pieces don’t hide anything…They just make us look bigger…) Luckily, most department stores can tailor your pieces in-house within a couple of days. Plus, we have plenty of talented seamstresses in our community!

My, pampered friends, is it you, or is the weather extra HOT lately? (I bet it’s both. *wink*)
Sudden changes in temperature can cause sickness and discomfort. Protecting yourself and those you love while the weather flip flops can get tricky. Here are some tips to beat the heat!
Watch what you drink... Stay hydrated, and refrain from drinks that are alcoholic, caffeinated, or heavily sweetened as they are diuretics. Heat exhaustion is no joke. Also, though it is tempting, do not intake drinks that are too cold, as they may cause cramping in the stomach. While sports drinks such as Gatorade and the like help replenish certain minerals we excrete when we sweat, they can also cause bloating. Make sure to alternate with good ol’ water.
Sweaters and umbrellas? ...but we live in San Diego!

One of my favorite forms of being pampered comes at the hands (literally) of a talented masseuse. Not only does a massage feel great, but it can also be great for you! Take the latest trend in massage treatments, foot reflexology, for example.
Foot reflexology is the practice of applying pressure to various points on the foot to stimulate other areas of the body. Reflexology is an effective stress reliever as well as a great complement to other medical care as it is a non-invasive way to reduce pain and discomfort, increase blood flow, improve digestion, and more! You all know I would never recommend anything to you that I didn’t try and enjoy myself, so I headed to Shang Hai Foot Spa to try this treatment I heard so much about.
With a name like “foot spa,” I was led to believe that the massage would be, well, on my feet. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this massage would be from head to toe. In fact, this may have been the most thorough massage I’ve ever received… and I didn’t even have to get undressed!
