Concert of Philippine Dances and Music
The SAMAHAN Filipino American Performing Arts and Education Center will present their 35th Annual Concert of Philippine Dances and Music at the Joan B. Kroc Theater, 6611 University Ave, San Diego on February 13 and 14, 2010, Saturday, at 8:00 p.m. and on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. The two-hour program of popular Filipino folk dances, choreographed for theater performance by Ruby Pearl B. Chiong, will showcase SAMAHAN's rich repertoire in vivid and colorful costumes. The exhilarating Maria Clara and Rural dances are performed with the lively music of the Samahan Rondalla under the direction of Frederick Embalsado, promising an enjoyable evening. In the Rural Suite, the ever popular Ilaw-Wasiwas, Binasuan and Tinikling, which Samahan dancers perform with skill and joy, end with a fast paced, very creative version of the Tinikling.

Southern Philippine tribal dances will be accompanied by the Samahan Kulintang Ensemble also known as the Pakaraguian Kulintang Ensemble, led by Bernard Ellorin, an Ethnomusicology graduate student at the University of Hawaii, Manoa.  The ensemble, which is one of the few presently playing the authentic music of the Maguindanao and Maranao tribes of Mindanao in the U.S., was trained by Danongan Sibay Kalanduyan, Master Artist/Teacher of Kulintang Music. Ruby Chiong will showcase dances including Sagayan, a war dance of both the Maguindanaons and Maranaos of Mindanao. The colorful and distinctive headgear and skirts worn by the dancers reflect the pageantry attached to the dance which is now commonly used as entertainment in weddings and other social gatherings. Interpretation of dances of the T'boli tribe of Cotabato will feature the authentic, intricately embroidered blouses, beaded necklaces and unique musical belts of the female dancers.

The general public is invited to attend this yearly celebration of Philippine cultural heritage by the SAMAHAN Philippine Dance Company and its musical ensembles. General admission is $15, students with ID and seniors 60 years and over is $12. Tickets will be available at the door. Group rate available for a group of at least 10 (needs to be prepaid).
