The power of the incumbent was again felt as the Filipino Americans’ favorite congress representatives, Bob Filner and Susan Davis of the 51st and 53rd Congressional District, respectively, won handily over their opponents.
A little known fact was the candidacy of Al Villamora, president of the Bicol Association and Julio de Guzman, past president of the Pangasinan Association, as members of their respective party’s Central Committee. Julio won but Al who was just trying to test the political waters came in last as candidate for the Democratic Central Committee.
Meanwhile, Filipino Americans had divided loyalties when it came to the San Diego City mayoral contest. Steve Francis gained popularity and support as he met with community leaders and supporters at home parties and numerous community events. While Filipino city employees remained loyal to the winning candidate – Jerry Sanders.
Another Fil-Am favorite, Mike Aguirre who run for re-election as City Attorney trailed behind Judge Jan Goldsmith. While many contend that the Filipino American vote is not large enough to make a candidate win, it is surmised that the Filipino American vote will make a big difference in Mike’s campaign. This remains to be proven in November 7.
All Filipinos who are U.S. citizens and reaping the benefits of citizenship, who are not yet registered to vote should register and vote on November 7. This is what democracy is all about.
